Yorkshire Days Out. Issue 2: The Coast

Quaint fishing villages, bustling harbours, sandy bays and dramatic cliffs, the Yorkshire coast is one of the most diverse and beautiful in Britain. We chose this stunning coastline as the backdrop for our Spring Summer 2016 photoshoot basing ourselves in Staithes, Sandsend and Whitby, so we thought we’d share a bit about these special places with you.

Staithes

A traditional fishing village sitting on a bay with a beck and harbour, Staithes was once a very busy fishing port. The harbour is now used predominantly by boats for leisure fishing, sightseeing and tending to the lobster pots which can often be seen piled up by the quayside. Steep and narrow cobbled streets lined with cottages lead down to the waterfront with plenty of quirky shops and cafes along the way. Don’t miss Dotty’s Vintage Tearoom for some delicious tea and cake surrounded by old curios. Down at the front sits the Cod & Lobster pub, a perfect spot overlooking the beach and cliffs to watch the day go by.

Sandsend

A wide stretch of sandy beach that’s popular for family days out and a dip in the sea when the sun comes out. Sandsend is a small pretty village with limestone cottages, green pastures and a stream running down into the sea. The delightful Turnstone Gallery features local artists and is the perfect place to see works inspired by the Yorkshire landscape followed by a snack at the beach-side cafe with a view of sea rolling in.

Whitby

Whitby

A bustling town by the sea which featured prominently in Bram Stokers Dracula and where the explorer James Cook learned his trade sailing vessels to and from the Baltic, Whitby can very easily occupy a day or more. Walk up the 199 steps to Whitby Abbey to take in the impressive views across the town and out to sea then head down to Magpie Cafe on the front for the best fish and chips in Yorkshire. Enjoy the penny falls and other amusements on the front or if you’re looking for something more energetic there’s always a dip in the sea off a sandy beach or take the three mile coastal path to pretty Robin Hood’s bay for seascape views and seaside nature.
